(note the fantastic breakfast of toast, strawberry jam, and strong black coffee in the background. My favourite.)
Part 1 of my Mother's Day surprise. Part two is on Nik's blog and I highly recommend watching the video below the house one as well. He taught them the theme words to House that we sing each time we watch it. Obsessed? Moi? Perhaps. We're about to finish season 4.
We bought five chickens yesterday! We were going to get just four but Nik really fancied a Leghorn once he saw them and it's better to home them all together so they can sort out the pecking order amongst themselves. They are all 15 weeks old and should start laying in about 4-6 weeks. I plan to use half the eggs and sell the rest to pay for the feed and hay etc.
We've got Vince who is a Nera and she's black and shiny with a bit of blue and green in her feathers. She is Vince Noir, Chicken Rock Star.
Next is Bollo who is a Blubelle. Bollo is a beautiful fluffy grey chicken. The colour is very calming. I've not got a bad feeling about this chicken. I've got a good feeling.
Naboo is a Speckeldy Hen and pretty much looks how she sounds. She is black with white speckles. I think Naboo is the first chicken I have ever picked up. Once you've done it once, it becomes not so freaking weird the next time. So far Naboo is very quiet and quite possibly stoned.
Howard is an Amber. Howard is a creamy white, beady eyed, jazz chicken. So far she is the noisiest one (must be all that jazz circulating around her head). So far Howard and Naboo have failed to navigate the chicken stairs to bed. We went to put them to bed last night and all of them bar these two managed to snuggle up. Howard was sitting on top of Naboo until Nik physically put them to bed.
and finally Lester Corncrake, the Leghorn. Nik really wanted Lester as she was solid white, with a high tail. She looks like a cock and that is no disrespect.
They seem to be sleeping in this morning. I think they've forgotten how to use the stairs. I love my chickens. They make me feel quite intelligent.
